Nissan is committed to providing the highest levels of product quality and customer satisfaction. Therefore, Nissan is extending the emission warranty coverage on some Rear Oxygen Sensors in certain model year 2013-2016 Sentra and Altima vehicles in the case of a short-to-ground condition to 20 Years or 200,000 miles, whichever occurs first, as described in detail below.
Coverage of all other vehicle components remains unchanged, and all other terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions of Nissan’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty, Federal Vehicle Emission Control Limited Warranties, and California Vehicle Emission Control Warranties remain unchanged.
Reason for the Emission Warranty Extension
Certain 2013-2016 Sentra and Altima vehicles may not be able to correctly identify if the Rear Oxygen Sensor experiences a short-to-ground condition. In the rare case of a Rear Oxygen Sensor short-to-ground condition, it may prevent detection of 13 specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) (P0037, P0038, P0130, P0137, P0138, P0139, P014C, P014D, P015A, P015B, P0420, P2096, or P2097) by the OBD monitoring system.
This has no effect on vehicle safety, drivability, or performance. There could be a slight decrease in fuel economy if this unlikely condition were to occur.
What the Limited Emission Warranty Extension Covers
During the warranty extension period, owners of certain model year 2013-2016 Sentra and Altima vehicles are eligible for annual Rear Oxygen Sensor voltage checks, upon request, to determine if a Rear Oxygen Sensor short-to-ground condition exists.
If a Rear Oxygen Sensor short-to-ground condition is found to exist during the covered voltage check, this Limited Emission Warranty extension will also cover the cost to inspect and repair or replace, as necessary, the sensor or wiring, and the cost to inspect for the existence of specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) for issues that may have been previously unidentified due to the short-to-ground condition.
If any of following 13 DTCs (P0037, P0038, P0130, P0137, P0138, P0139, P014C, P014D, P015A, P015B, P0420, P2096, or P2097) is first found only after a short-to-ground repair, this Limited Emission Warranty extension will cover the costs of parts and labor to inspect and repair the corresponding issue(s) according to the service manuals available to your dealer.
This check could take up to one (1) hour but could take up to three (3) hours to complete if related diagnostic trouble codes exist and require remedy. Your Nissan dealer may require your vehicle for a longer period of time based upon their work schedule.
What You Should Do
If you are interested in having a Rear Oxygen Sensor voltage check performed, Nissan recommends you schedule an appointment with your Nissan dealer prior to your annual or biennial Inspection/Maintenance (I/M or “Smog”) tests, in locations where such testing is required by law.
You may contact any Nissan dealer to schedule this check. To minimize any inconvenience to you, it is important that you have an appointment before bringing your vehicle to the Nissan dealer for service.
Certain 2013-2016 impacted vehicles are eligible for this Limited Emission Warranty extension regardless of whether non-original parts were used for previous service and repairs, or if the service was performed by a repair facility other than a Nissan dealer.

Reimbursement:
If you own one of the identified 2013-2016 Sentra or Altima vehicles impacted by this warranty extension and previously paid to diagnose and repair a Rear Oxygen Sensor short-to-ground issue within the warranty extension term of 20 years or 200,000 miles (whichever occurs first), you may be eligible for reimbursement of this expense, even if your vehicle is now beyond the limits of the warranty extension. Please visit the Reimbursement Form tab listed within this campaign site, access the reimbursement claim form, and follow the instructions on the form, including submission of the following documents:
Special Notice for California Owners
You should also be aware that if your vehicle has a Rear Oxygen Sensor short-to-ground issue and it is not repaired, it could fail a Smog Check test in those areas of California where such testing is required under state law.
Diagnostic Trouble Codes that may have been masked by a failure to detect the SCG condition
In the unlikely event of a Rear O2 Sensor SCG, one or more of the following 13 DTCs could possibly be masked. Most are associated with diagnostic checks on the Front (Sensor 1) or Rear (Sensor 2) Oxygen Sensors that would not have been completed if a SCG existed.
1. P0037 – Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Control Circuit Low (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
2. P0038 – Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
3. P0130 – Oxygen Sensor Circuit (Bank 1, Sensor 1)
4. P0137 – Oxygen Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
5. P0138 – Oxygen Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
6. P0139 – Oxygen Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
7. P014C – Oxygen Sensor Slow Response – Rich to Lean (Bank 1, Sensor 1)
8. P014D – Oxygen Sensor Slow Response – Lean to Rich (Bank 1, Sensor 1)
9. P015A – Oxygen Sensor Delayed Response – Rich to Lean (Bank 1, Sensor 1)
10. P015B – Oxygen Sensor Delayed Response – Lean to Rich (Bank 1, Sensor 1)
11. P0420 – Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
12. P2096 – Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Lean (Bank 1)
13. P2097 – Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Rich (Bank 1)
In the unlikely event of an actual Rear O2 Sensor short-to-ground, previously masked faults will be diagnosed correctly by the OBD system after SCG repair. Although anticipated to be rare, repairs for previously masked faults may include replacement of the Rear Oxygen Sensor, replacement of the Front Oxygen (Air/Fuel Ratio) Sensor, replacement of the monitored catalyst, or fixing intake air/exhaust gas leaks. Any remedies required to address previously masked faults are covered by this field action, and your technician will follow standard service manual procedures to make the required repairs.
If no Rear O2 Sensor short-to-ground is found on your vehicle, the OBD system is functioning properly. In this case, no DTCs (including those listed above) would have been previously masked, and corresponding repairs are not covered by this field action. Please refer to your vehicle’s Warranty Information Booklet for applicable coverages.
No. This is not a recall. This is a warranty extension.
To ensure customer satisfaction, Nissan has determined the affected vehicles may fail to detect the rear oxygen (02) sensor short circuit to ground (SCG).
Affected vehicles may fail to detect the rear oxygen (O2) sensor short circuit to ground (SCG). Undetected SCG may result in failure to pass emissions testing.
Nissan is extending the emission warranty coverage on affected vehicles’ Rear Oxygen Sensor in the case of a short-to-ground condition 20 years/200,000 miles (whichever occurs first).
During the warranty extension period, annual Rear Oxygen Sensor voltage checks will be covered, upon request, to determine if a Rear Oxygen Sensor short-to-ground condition exists.
If a Rear Oxygen Sensor short-to-ground condition is found to exist during the covered voltage check, the Limited Emission Warranty extension will also cover the cost to inspect and repair or replace, as necessary, the sensor or wiring, and the cost to inspect for the existence of specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) for issues that may have been previously unidentified due to the short-to-ground condition. If those DTCs are first found only after a short-to-ground repair, the Limited Emission Warranty extension will cover the costs of parts and labor to inspect and repair the corresponding issue(s).
This service, which is conducted at no charge to you for parts and labor, should take one (1) hour but could take up to three (3) hours to complete if related diagnostic trouble codes exist and require remedy. However, your Nissan dealer may require your vehicle for a longer period of time based upon their work schedule.
No, any authorized dealer is able to perform the warranty repair.
If you previously had to replace your oxygen sensor on your model year 2013-2016 Sentra or Altima and Nissan did not cover the cost of the repair, you may also submit your reimbursement form via email or fax by downloading and completing the following form including submission of the documents listed below:
